Pocket Guide to the Types of Internet Service
One of the most important things to decide before you select an Internet provider is what type of service you need and that is dependent on quite a few things. Here is a quick cheat sheet for the types of internet service:
•Dial-Up Internet - This is where you use a landline phone service and a modem to dial up and connect to the internet usually at lower speeds (56K is average).
•High Speed Internet - This refers to a normally constant connection to the Internet that utilizes DSL, Cable, Cellular, or Satellite technologies to connect generally at speeds at least 4X faster than Dial-Up.
•Cable Internet - Most cable providers also offer high speed Internet service for their customers using existing analog or digital cable connections along with a cable modem.
•Mobile Internet - Technologies like CLEAR utilize 4G technologies to allow you to connect to the Internet at high speeds, usually utilizing the WiFi capabilities of most computers and devices.
•Satellite Internet - Most satellite internet service providers use satellite technologies to download and then analog lines (like Dial-Up) to upload data to the Internet.
